Editors Note: Full Super Market Grocery routes of regular grocery food have in general failed, whenever tried.
However, Schwans food out of Minnesota has thousands of refrigerated small trucks with compartment doors all the way around, that deliver on regular routes all over the country. (every state)
They even have trucks in Arizona, 1,200 miles away.
They have been in business 55 plus years.
This started out primarily as deliverying a really good ice cream they made, on a reguar weekly basis to farmers. Became popular and developed in town customers as well and deliver all sorts of specialized food such as pizza, egg rolls, desserts, to farmers, as well as schools, stores, restaurants, and city folks now. They have also developed an online business. Sell over 400 food products now.
This is an example of how you can develop and expand a route business. The owners of this solely route based firm have been in business for years and are still privately owned and multimillionaires.
Started and still operate out of a small town in Minnesota, (Marshall) and say they have a presence in 50 countries.
Listed as having 18,000 employees
My understanding is that the drivers are subcontractors, though not positive.
They well could be independant business people and lease the trucks from the firm, and purchase for resale from the firm.
If this is the case they may be allowed to sell their route to someone else. price based on business they are doing, number of customers etc.
